An unfortunate fact of newsgroup (NG) life is that some people seem to derive pleasure out of disrupting groups with inappropriate and often abusive posts. Some trolls deliberately set out to destroy groups.
While most NG reader kill-filters can cope with standard troll attacks, they often fail to protect against those that use more sophisticated methods. NewsProxy is a free firewall application that sits between the NG reader and your ISP's newsgroup server and filters out troll posts before they get to your newsreader.
NewsProxy can be set to filter on all header fields, including some hidden ones, not just the one or two that most NG readers are capable of. This allows for very extensive filtering that is difficult for trolls to avoid.
Filter data files written in a format that trolls find difficult to circumvent can be downloaded from the filter_files page and will be updated as necessary.
Note:: NewsProxy won't work with AOL, webTV, or through some firewalls. It requires Windows 9x/ME, NT4, Win2000.
